Celebrating biodiversity
Welcome to Borders Meadows Trust
Species-rich grasslands were once commonplace across the UK. Now, the sad fact is that these glorious habitats have been all but eradicated from our landscape and our collective consciousness. Changes in land use have led to the destruction of 99% of the UK’s meadows in less than a century. We are working to bring wildflower meadows back to the Scottish Borders.
The importance of fungi in meadows
The grasslands of Britain and Ireland are home to a wide range of fungi. These include macrofungi (large enough to be seen with the unaided eye) and microfungi (requiring a microscope to observe). Some of the most important of the grassland fungi are referred to as the ‘CHEGD assemblage’ – an acronym for five groups of ecologically important and, in many cases, vulnerable grassland fungi.
